Role: UX Designer

Creating a clean and functional mobile experience to support community project leaders in managing crowdfunding campaigns

The organization and their challenge:

The organization and their challenge:

ioby is a crowd-funding platform and community organizing non-profit focused on the power of local engagement to create large-scale positive change. The organization is dedicated to supporting local Leaders in organizing their neighbors to fundraise for and execute local projects.

User surveys show that ioby’s Leaders are specifically looking for better ways to connect with their donors to update them on their projects’ progress and create closer relationships for future and deeper engagement. This creates an opportunity to leverage a mobile apps’ ability to periodically and casually connect with users to contribute to a strong organic relationship.

Getting to know the people of ioby:

In order to understand the needs of ioby’s users and create a persona for the project, I interviewed people from key demographics and collaborated with the ioby team to leverage their robust survey data.

Ashley Baker, 31, Classroom Aide
Ashley knows her neighbors well and spends a lot of time with friends and family. She believes in community responsibility and has a lot of ideas about how things could be better. She’s not interested in tech unless it is practical and easy to use.

Needs: Support doing community work efficiently and easy ways to connect to community members

Fears: Not connecting well with her volunteers, donors, and community, wasting time with over complicated tech, and not accomplishing her project

After creating the ioby Leader persona I took a step back to map out what the functionality of an app could look like, based on existing site functionality and desired features.

After creating the ioby Leader persona I took a step back to map out what the functionality of an app could look like, based on existing site functionality and desired features.

I created maps for both the leader and donor sides of the product, even though the focus of the project was on Leaders. I wanted to visualize how the two sides would function together.

Ideal ioby Leader App Flow: Easy to take action from the project page, easy to connect with donors and volunteers from the app and push notifications support engagement with donors.

Ideal ioby Donor App Flow: Easy to view and engage with multiple projects

Initial Sketches:

Initial Sketches:

I tried an accordion design at first, where all content would be accessible on one page. Then I tried having separate pages for each action item was cleaner and decided having separate pages was less cluttered.

First Design Iteration:

First Design Iteration:

In these initial designs, the focus was on helping Leaders quickly take in their campaign details and action areas.

I tested this design with seven participants, determined problem areas and solutions and brought them back to the users.

Latest Design and Next Steps:

Latest Design and Next Steps:

The identified Ioby Leader needs were: easy to use technology, the ability to connect with donors, and the ability to run campaigns on-the-go

The final ioby App Design has clear, action-oriented user flows, transparent donor information, an accessible communication features, and is mobile-oriented.

The ioby team has been expanding their in-house tech team and we may partner on a build in the future.
